Art 1
Final Project
For this project we got to choose what we made. I chose a watercolor painting of a girl laying on her bed with a lot of things around her. I tried to do something challenging and I think I succeeded. It was my first time using watercolor so I had to practice and get used to it before I started the project. It was hard to learn a new medium and get used to it so I could start as soon as possible. I chose to make a lot of little details to take up time because after I got all the colors to where I wanted, in color and placing, there wasn't much else for me to do. There were a lot of frustrating and hard parts but the most had to be taking off the watercolor tape. Taking the tape off requires patience which I have very little so by the last strip I didn't wait long enough and I left a huge rip in the top of the painting. Overall there were a lot of things I liked about it like how you build up the colors and I think I would do this again.
Think outside the box
In this project we had to take a 2 x 2 piece of magazine and make it into something else. I chose to take the trees from it and make it into a mother nature inspired girl. I got this idea because the texture of the trees kinda reminded me of 4c hair and I thought it would look really nice. It was really hard to color match because there was a lot of similar colors and I had to figure out when and where to use them. I had to wing it most times to get the exact color I was looking for and I messed up in some areas and had to do hide stuff with gradation. I don't really like colored pencils and the texture they give off but I think I did a good job using them to the fullest. It was also hard choosing which magazine clip I wanted cause there were so many choices. I really enjoyed watching it all come together in the end. I didn't totally hate using colored pencils and would maybe use them again.
Dream house
During this project I learned what perspective is and how to use it. We had to come up with our dream house beginning with a plan and a layout. I struggled a bit with the layout like how big a square should be but I ended up figuring it out. After that we had to practice one, two, and three point perspective. I found that three point was really hard and confusing while one and two point perspective came much easier. I ended up choosing two point perspective because I thought it would look best and I'm happy with my decision. I had trouble distinguishing what should be going back to the vanishing point and what should be parallel with another line. Which had me redoing a the first floor a whole bunch. The roof was pretty straight forward except for a couple parts which I ended up fixing. I decided to do color and I'm really happy with the result. Coloring was probably the easiest part of this process and I really enjoyed it. The only annoying thing was that I had to go over my lines with a fineliner so the marker wouldn't ruin it. Over all I did like this project but next time I would choose something a little smaller.
Abstract
On this project I made an abstract piece. I used most of the time we were given on this project. This project was challenging because I've never made anything abstract and I've never been interested in abstract artwork. It was hard for me to follow the instructions because the more I added the worse it looked and it didn't look like it was getting better. I had to use a lot of different techniques that I'm not the most familiar with. I don't think it pulled itself together in the end because of how mitch matched and incohesive it looks. I liked it in the beginning when I just had to draw shapes and color them in. Other than that I really didn't like it and probably wouldn't do it again.
Alebrijes
At the beginning of this project we learned the basics of creating things with clay. We were taught how to wedge and how to use scoring and slip to connect the different pieces of clay together. I struggled a bit with creating the body and getting proportions how I wanted them. I redid the body 3 times before I was happy with the result. The front legs gave me a lot of trouble because they had to be even and be able to hold the rest of the body up. I redid one leg about 2 times. It was also really challenging to make the betta fish tail I was scared it might break off in the kiln but it came out all in one piece. All the techniques showed really helped me not panic and get straight to what needed fixed. Painting it was very fun for me I loved making texture with it and I think I did a really good job on the gradation and patterns. I was scared all the different patterns would clash too much but it still looks good. Overall I did not really like the clay experience the texture and the way it affected my hands threw me off. I had a lot of fun painting it though and I can't wait to complete it on thursday.
My Final Project
For this project I made a portrait of a girl crying. To make it unique and more challenging I used all purple except for the background, eyes, and shoulder straps I also added pearl beads that she is crying. I tried to combine a little of everything from my past projects. Like proportions, only being limited to one color, and painting. I think i've pretty much gotten the handle on proportions and being limited to one color but the painting is where I really wanted to improve. I wanted to add better gradation and overall be happier with the outcome than I was last time and I think i've accomplished those things. Something I think I could still work on is making the illusion of texture with paint I don't think I got it quite right in this. I think this was very challenging but enjoyable.
Self Portrait
In this project I learned how to properly make a face and how to measure where things go on the face. I started with a printed black and white picture of me and had to make the proportions bigger on the paper. Then I used value for the texture which was hard to replicate on paper. The direction of the shading was hard to find and I messed it up on the hair a little bit. I found the proportions and trying to make it resemble me the hardest part. My favorite part would probably be drawing the accessories and the symbols. The necklace is one of the first things of my great grandmothers that I got after she passed. The camera is also one of her belongings and it took the photos of my mom and dad's wedding so it's very important to me. The pencil and paintbrush is because I love art and is special to me and has since I was a kid.
Still life painting
In this project I learned many different painting techniques to make texture. I used mainly the dry brush, gradation, and modeling. I did also use pointillism and wash but mostly for the oranges. This project really showed me how hard different textures and contrast can be on a painting. I liked making the background and mixing the different colors in the bowl. The shading was fun except for the oranges which were a real challenge for me. In the end I didn't have time to make the leaves but if I did make them I'm sure that would have been really challenging with all the different colors and lighting.
Close Up Value Drawing
In this project, I learned how to replicate a photo using value and how important and hard contrast is in a value drawing. I learned that texture is very hard to do when things are only in the transitions from black to white. To make this I had to print a photo and scale it to a different size for my drawing paper. I liked doing the shading and blocking what goes where the rest I didn't particularly love. Making the drawing to a bigger proportions was really hard and the texture kept throwing me off.
